A Star on the Rise
Summerlyn Powers is a native of Fairhope, Alabama, and at 14 years old is a rising country music star. Summerlyn recently heard that the Foley, AL, chapter of the Guitars not Guns Music program was in need of volunteer guitar instructors at the Snook Youth Center, so she jumped at the chance to help Reggie Pulliam, the chapter president. Summerlyn teaches guitar during the summer months and loves it, so she thought this would be a great opportunity to share her gift.
She and her mom drove 40 minutes to Foley, AL, to the Snook Youth Center. She met the kids, started helping them with a few chords, and loved every minute of that first hour! She knew that Guitars Not Guns was something she wanted to be a part of. Summerlyn is hoping to help open a chapter in her hometown of Fairhope, AL, and give the kids an opportunity to fall in love with the guitar while helping them express themselves through music instead of violence.
